There is a new WordPress update this week that is messing up websites and sidebars. Annoying I know. I’ve read multiple questions over the weekend and we even had it happen on NorthshoreParent.com. It freaked Katy and I out because we couldn’t figure out how to fix the problem. So I did a little research and found the fix that will take care of it.
This issue seems to only be happening on websites that run the Genesis Child Theme Framework from StudioPress. We LOVE the Genesis themes at StudioPress and use them on all of our sites. So we’re happy the fix for this issue is simple, quick and painless. What seems to be happening is that Genesis isn’t telling you it needs to be updated with you Update WordPress. So you update WordPress and then your side bars go FUNKY. Insert FREAK OUT here. But don’t panic because the we can fix this and you don’t need to spend money hiring someone to do it for you.
BTW, a little disclaimer, you should always keep WordPress, themes and plugins up to date. ALWAYS! This is the number one way hackers gain access to your site. That said, let’s fix this current issue. First you need to go to your dashboard and on the left side where it says Genesis, highlight it and click on Theme Settings. At the top of Theme Settings there is a check box that says Check For Updates. Make sure that is checked and save.
This now checks for updates to Genesis (the newest updated version is 2.4.2). The next step is to go to Dashboard and click on Updates. When you get there under Themes it should now show you that you need to update Genesis. Do that!
Once Genesis updates, your site should be back to normal! See that wasn’t so bad was it? It was easy and you did it yourself. GO YOU!
If you have any other questions, let me know and I’ll do my best to help!
